2016-2017 Western Region Alpine Skills Development Workshop

This year the Western Region will be holding an ASDW (Alpine Skills Development Workshop, formerly STW’s) at Wild Mountain Ski and Snowboard Area in Taylors Falls MN on Jan. 7th 2017.

This year's ASDW's are different than from years past.  This year’s traditional Division ASDW's are available only to a select group of trainers/instructors.  These groups will then pass on the information they receive in a Region level ASDW.

Our current ASDW agenda is scheduled to include Ski/Ride sessions including telemark, Toboggan sessions, Senior program sessions and additionally a Certified demo session.  These sessions are open to all patrollers within the Region and will be designed to transfer the latest top notch information our IT's gain at the 2016 Central Division ASDW's and to have some fun!

More information particular to each session can be viewed HERE and registration for the event will be available soon on the Western Region website calendar, so please stay tuned.  We are looking forward to a great event and seeing you there!

New to the NSP organization this year is the requirement for each participant enrolled in a patrol event to also register at National in order to receive credit when the course is closed.  This means that in addition to registering at our Region level using the Western Region calendar, each participant needs to login to the National website, find the correct course number and enroll.  Please follow the screen prompts completely to completion.

The following course numbers are setup for this Western Region ASDW event:

  • Ski/Ride Session - C296170001
  • Toboggan Session - C019170002
  • Toboggan Instructor Recert - C019170003
  • Senior Evaluator Session - C140170001
Register for those HERE and enter the "Course Number equals" -> Find to enroll.

It took a little while, but...

Warren Mickelson served the National Ski Patrol as a volunteer patroller at Ski Haven/Mt Kato Ski area for over 20 years.  He is a current Alumni member of the NSP.  He never received his 20 year pin and certificate.   We confirmed his years of service through  the NSP archives and ordered the pin and certificate.
His family presented them to him recently at a family gathering, much to his surprise and joy.

Warren first joined in 1971 and patrolled through 1991 and for maybe a couple more years. He completed Avalanche Level I in 1975.

His daughter contacted us last Fall about him never receiving his 20 year certificate and pin.  Her inquiry indicated how much it would mean to him to receive this.  With a little research and help from National we confirmed that he did serve 20 years for Ski Haven/Mt Kato Ski Patrol.
